Kim Petras and Sam Smith win Pop Duo/Group Grammy Award for Unholy
Kim Petras is a Grammy winner forever!
Sam Smith earned their fifth Grammy Award and the Petras their first as they won Best Pop Group/Duo Performance for their song “Unholy” from Smith’s album Gloria.
Smith allowed Terrace to accept the award. In her speech, she thanked Smith for her support, and gave credit to the trans women in music who came before her. She specifically thanked legendary Grammy-nominated producer and electronic artist SOPHIE, who passed away in 2021.
Petras began by saying that Smith has long been a supporter of hers and that they wanted her to accept the award, as she is the first trans woman to win the award.
“I just wanted to thank all the amazing transgender legends before me who opened these doors for me to be here tonight.”
“Sophie, especially. My friend who passed away two years ago, who told me this would happen and always believed in me. Thank you so much for your inspiration, Sophie. I adore you and your inspiration in my music will forever be.”
Petras also thanked Madonna for her fight for LGBT rights, saying “I don’t think I could be here without Madonna”.
Finally, Petras spoke about her mother. “I grew up near an autobahn anywhere in Germany, and my mother believed me that I was a girl and I wouldn’t be here without her, her support, and everyone who believed in me up until this point.”
Smith was nominated for six Grammy Awards in 2015, winning four of them, including Best New Artist, Record, and Song of the Year.
