Talk to OK! magazine, she discussed the feelings she experienced after being told that surgery was her best option for relieving her symptoms.

She said, “As a woman, we often take it for granted that you can get pregnant and then when you’re not and the choice is taken away…”

Mum to twins Jamie and Maya, 16, Rita said she’s not considering having any more children, but it’s still “strange” that the choice has been taken away.

The former soap star began dating her current partner Ben during the lockdown of 2020 following her divorce from ex-husband Theo Silveston.

Her “nice” boyfriend knows, Rita explained, not to mention that more kids know he’s “completely off the table” for them.

The star told how she first spoke to a doctor about her “exhausting, irregular periods” during the early months of their new relationship.

Rita’s periods would negatively affect her OCD and anxiety and leave her unable to function during the weeks she was high.

‘I was on the panto and it got to the point where I was telling my agent not to book me on dates where I knew I was going to be on my period,’ she said, ’cause work was so hard. It was exhausting and I knew I couldn’t get through this every month.

My feelings were blown away every month. I’ve gotten to the point where I have to have five days a month where I’m fine, then I start ovulating again and everything goes downhill.

At first, Rita tried a hormonal combination of estrogen and progesterone, but that mixture left her feeling sick and she knew it wasn’t a long-term solution.

She was then told that the “only option” was to remove her uterus, cervix, and both ovaries in a complete, radical hysterectomy, which she described as an “attack on her womanhood”.

However, she has admitted that the benefits to her mental health outweigh the side effects, which she says is good for her daughters and Ben.

Before meeting Ben, Rita previously admitted that she considered ‘throwing herself down the stairs’, while battling anxiety and depression.

In January 2022, Rita revealed that she was struggling to deal with the breakdown of her 14-year marriage to husband Theo and ‘ate it up’ to keep the news quiet.

I told the sun: “It was all rolled into one big mess and I was very sick often. I lost a lot of weight. And I wasn’t going to tell people about the marriage because even though my kids knew, I didn’t want them to read about it. It just ate me up, and I couldn’t tell people what was really going on.

Revealing her bottom moment, she recalled one night during a performance of The House On Cold Hill in 2019: ‘There were some stairs in the set that I went up on stage, pretty high at the top.

And I thought I could drop myself. I do not want to die. I just wanted to hurt myself enough to go to the hospital and have someone take care of me. That was scary.’

Rita – who played Roxy Mitchell in EastEnders from 2007 to 2017 – married hairdresser Theo in 2004, but they divorced in 2018, and their divorce was finalized in 2020.

Rita admitted she struggled to get out of bed when she was at her worst.

‘When I look back, I used to be very aggressive, solid and defensive, and I was on my guard all the time,’ she said.

“If something bad happens, I’ll be the first to go, ‘Rag!'” ’ and starts screaming.

Rita said she used to challenge her anger at the gym where she started boxing, insisting she didn’t lose her temper today and that the time she had taken away from her marriage had ‘melted’ it.

Thinking back to some of her bad moments, my ex-celebrity… get me out of here! ‘It was a deep melancholy,’ I would say depression, said the fellow camp. I couldn’t see the wood of the trees.

While the star, who has suffered from anxiety and OCD since around the age of seven, knew she had to take some time off, she has kept herself busy with work, signing up to appear in the West End musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and the pantomime Sleeping Beauty after leaving EastEnders as Roxy Mitchell in 2017. .

Rita is still friends with Theo today but has described the divorce process as “cold” and “clinical”.
