St Helens hits TV screens again this week, with the former head office in Pilkington featured as a hospital in a new ITV drama.

Maternal debuts Monday, January 16 starring Parminder Nagra (Bend it Like Beckham), Lara Pulver (Spooks, Sherlock), and Lisa McGrillis (Last Night in Soho).

It tells the stories of Mary, a pediatric registrar, Katherine, a general practitioner and trauma surgeon, and Helen, a registrar in acute medicine, as they each try to balance their increasingly demanding jobs in frontline medicine after the pandemic and their lives as new mothers.

But it won’t be the last time St Helens appears on our screens this year.

At that time, spectators traveling on the railway between St Helens and Liverpool reported seeing huge groups on the ground, where battle scenes were unfolding.

It was speculated at the time that both Jackson and Clark were in St. Helens filming.

A statement on the Disney+ website confirms the spin-off is coming soon: “The comedy crossover event series features a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.” is verifying that the series will air in the spring of 2023.

There will also be a crime drama filmed in St Helens by streaming service Paramount+.

The town has been increasingly used by the creative industries for photography. Last year’s Netflix hit Stay Close saw Dream in Sutton Manor prominently, while BBC drama The Responder was filmed in and around Taylor Park.

The Liverpool City Region injected funding into the film industry in the belief that it would reap benefits for the economy.

Plans to make the North Hollywood area

Speaking in 2021, Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Metro Region, said: “Our region is a vibrant and innovative hub for creativity and talent.

“Because of devolution, we can direct financing to help protect it during challenging periods like a pandemic, and help it grow and thrive in normal times.

“Our heritage, architecture, talent and people mean that we will always be able to attract film and television productions from around the world.

“This money was particularly gratifying because it was able to sponsor local projects, promote local writers, directors, and actors and bring them to the rest of the country.

“We have ambitious plans to help make our region ‘North Hollywood’, with £17m already invested to develop film studios in Littlewoods, helping us to meet production needs from writing and shooting, through to editing and publishing-production.”
