It’s today’s topic

GEMMA Dean has been a hairdresser since she was 18 and has trained with some of the greats in the industry.

The Secret Halo opened in 2019 specializing in hair styling, hair loss, wigs and hair extensions.

After suffering from alopecia areata and losing her hair at the age of 19, Gemma, who is from Eccleston, wanted to know more about wigs and how to style them, so she could incorporate them into her job as a hairdresser.

Here the 32-year-old, who scooped the first of our Best of the Year awards 2022 earlier this year officially the St Helens Best Poetry Prize, tells us how she trained with Trevor Sowerby in London and how her Christmas gift of pink intrigued her. in hairdressing.

Why did you decide to open your own salon?

I’ve always wanted to own my own salon since I started doing hair at the age of 16. I’m ambitious and focused, so when I got the chance, I was able to unlock The Secret Halo.

What is your hair and beauty background?

At the age of 16, I started hairdressing as an apprentice and did my level 2 and 3 in hairdressing before finishing my level 4 in business management. Having suffered from alopecia areata when I was younger, I knew I wanted to specialize in hair loss and wigs and went to train with Trevor Sowerby in London.

Why this kind of business?

When I was a young 13-year-old, I remember opening a Christmas gift and finding new GHD straighteners for breast cancer awareness pink and that was the beginning of my passion for hairstyling. I was experimenting with my own hair and that of my family and friends, creating GHD curls before they were a thing. The more I experiment with hair, the more I love it! I love helping people and being creative, and I enjoy being able to solve a problem.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your work?

The pandemic has been a whirlwind of anxiety and uncharted territory for even the most seasoned business owners. Having to lock my doors and not knowing when they would open again was heartbreaking. I had to think about the staff I had to work with, the bills and the rent that needed to be paid. Doing all this and not being able to work and earn money was a scary thought and I thought seriously about what was best for the salon and its future. The rules about what we can and cannot do have been a minefield. Dealing with the pandemic goes far beyond not being able to run a business. We have unfortunately lost clients and lost family members due to the Covid-19 virus, which was heartbreaking.

What’s Next? What do the next few months hold for you and your salon?

We have an announcement we’ll be making in the new year. Something new and bold is coming to St Helens that will give people stars in their eyes. I can’t say more than that, at the moment, but it promises to be great.
