Michael Clarke is distraught when he falls silent on live radio while a listener defends him over the Noosa case

Michael Clarke received an embarrassing return to the airwaves Monday when he hosted his first radio show of the year — less than a week after footage of his smoldering feud with girlfriend Jade Yarbrough went viral.

The former Australian cricket captain, 41, was stunned at the silence Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast When a listener called to his defense about the incident at a public park in Noosa earlier this month, forcing one of his hosts to step in and say “It’s a private matter.”

During a segment where listeners discussed their “heroes and villains” of the week, the woman praised Clarke for being “discreet” by not fueling scandal with more comments.

Despite being praised, Clarke refused to say anything, and his colleague took over the conversation by assuring that the matter would not be discussed on air.

The listener said, “My hero is Clarkie because he was discreet about what happened, and the villain is the person who filmed and sold it to the media.”

I mean, come on, you know, it’s a private matter. Leave it at that. It didn’t have to be [made] General.’

Clark remained silent when host Gerard Middleton intervened.

“It was a private matter, and early this morning we said that at the end of the day, this is a private matter announced,” Middleton said.

He added, “There are a lot of factors at play, so we’re certainly moving forward and making things private this morning, but we appreciate your calling.”

Earlier in the programme, the Big Sports Breakfast hosts briefly mentioned the Noosa incident – but only to say they wouldn’t discuss it.

“Now, of course,” said Middleton, shortly after 5:30 a.m. [there is] Tremendous magic in Clarke’s life and we just instantly get to his head.

He continued, “It’s a private matter that Clarke was obviously dealing with, a very, very private matter, which unfortunately has been made public.”

“There are a lot of factors at play here and Clarke made his statement last week and because of all the factors at play we’re going ahead with The Big Sports Breakfast this morning.”

Despite the serious tone, Middleton couldn’t resist joking about the hamstring injury Clark sustained during the January 10 brawl.

At the start of the broadcast, Clarke told co-hosts Middleton and Laurie Daly that his injury was “on the mend” as the trio discussed their summer vacation.

Gerard Middleton said: 'It was a private matter, and early this morning we said that at the end of the day, this is a private matter made public.

Clark didn't go into detail about his summer vacation, except to say that five weeks off the air felt like 'a long time' and he was struggling with his 4am alarm that morning.

Middleton later remarked that the bruise on Hame was “two feet” long.

I want to ask you, you showed us before that hamstring bruise, that’s unbelievable, my friend. “You won’t be able to walk properly for weeks,” he joked.

Clark shrugged off his injury, saying, “No, it’s okay, buddy, he’s on the mend, I’m all right, I’m ready, game day, fine, on the mend.”

A veteran of 115 Tests for Australia, Clarke has filled in for Big Sports Breakfast since he first partnered with Canberra NRL legend Daley in 2020.

The prodigious scorer has also been in commentary as part of the ICC broadcast team for World Cricket Championships, but has no other major media presence in Australia.

Extraordinary footage emerged last Wednesday of a heated exchange between Clarke and his girlfriend Jed Yarbrough while they were on holiday in Noosa.

In the video, which was filmed by an onlooker on January 10 and later sold to The Daily Telegraph for $10,000, Yarbrough accused Clark of cheating on her with former fashion designer Babe Edwards, on December 17.

Others on the set, including Today’s host Karl Stefanovic, his wife Jasmine — Yarbrough’s sister, and famed accountant Anthony Bell — tried to defuse the fight.

Yarbrough and Clark, who was limping in the footage after injuring his hamstring, have since been hit with “public nuisance” fines.

Since then, Clark has taken full remorse for what happened.

I am absolutely devastated that I have given the people I hold in the highest regard in this position. He said that my actions in the lead-up to this quarrel were shameful and deplorable.

“I am shattered by my actions, I have drawn women of class and integrity, my colleagues, into this position.”

Edwards also issued a statement the night the footage was released.

This is not a circus. Again, Michael in his true nature did not take responsibility for his actions and she blatantly lied.
