It’s today’s topic

Two establishments within a short journey of St Helens are included in SquareMeal’s list of the 100 best restaurants in the UK.

Moor Hall in Aughton, West Lancashire came fifth on the list, ranking higher than other North West restaurants featured, while Manifest in Liverpool came in at 42nd.

Square Mail is the UK’s leading independent restaurant guide and deliberately excludes London restaurants to allow recognition of venues from across the UK.

Speaking about the list, SquareMeal said, “Each of the Top 100 hits is a unique combination of our internal, critic-led opinions and thousands of diners’ votes.

“It is this dual approach that makes our list incomparable, representing not just our professional opinion but thousands of real-life experiences that help inform and support our final decisions.”

What did the Square Mill say about Moore Hall?

SquareMeal writes: “Marc Birchall, formerly executive chef at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant L’Enclume, has brought his signature style to this restaurant that has rooms inside a historic 16th-century manor house. Champagne and aperitifs are served next to an open fire.” The wood-paneled lounge sets the historic scene, but the dining room couldn’t look more modern.”

Moor Hall is also well rated on Tripadvisor, with a rating of five from 643 reviews.

Much of Moor Hall’s produce is sourced close to home, SquareMeal added: “Much of the restaurant’s produce is grown on its five-acre property or sourced locally – Aughton is in the midst of some of the most fertile farmland in the country – and the result is two menusor tastings they display Birchall’s innovations and remarkable talents.”

What did SquareMeal say about Manifest?

SquareMeal wrote: “For seasonal dishes and a big helping of famous Liverpool hospitality, head to Manifesti. This wine bar and restaurant was created with food and wine in mind. This industrial-style restaurant is a true gem found in the heart of the city’s Baltic Triangle.”

The Manifest also impressed reviewers on Tripadvisor, with a rating of five out of 46 reviews.

Manifest supports local producers and winemakers and some of the food is made in-house, said SquareMeal: “The name Manifest is inspired by the region’s shipping trade history, and that’s not the only way the restaurant embraces its local roots. The Manifest team takes great pride in sourcing highly seasonal goods Quality to support local producers and winemakers.

“Service is attentive yet casual to allow diners to eat and drink at their leisure. The team aspires to make as much in-house as possible, so you can expect fresh bread, homemade oils, preserves and pickles, along with charcuterie boards of seasonal produce.”
