Michael Smith’s golden run of glory continued at the 2023 Bahrain Darts Masters, as he beat Jeroen Price 8-6 inriday’s final.
The inaugural edition of the Bahrain Darts Masters, in partnership with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, saw 16 players compete in The Dome at the Bahrain International Circuit over two days.
While the eight PDC stars defeated the eight Asian representatives on the first day, it was reigning world champion Smith who took home the £20,000 title and third world championship victory.
The success was also Smith’s third televised title in as many months, after his Grand Slam of Darts and World Championship victories propelled him to the top of the world rankings.
Smith had sparkled in his first-round win over Abdel Nasser Youssef on Thursday but had to go 3-1 down to beat Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 in the quarter-finals and was trailing early in the semi-finals with Raymond. Van Barneveld.
The St. Helens star showed their mettle again fighting back for a 7-5 win, then beating Price in an entertaining final.
The pair shared the opening four legs – which included Price landing a perfect six-dart finish in the third – before Smith broke for the first time to take a 3–2 lead.
The next two legs also went with a throw before Smith posted a legs 11 and 13 dart in a blast to rise to a 7-3 advantage.
Price fired a dart from 11 overs and punished a missed match dart from Smith in leg 12 when he bounced back to trail just 7-6, but was unable to finish 97 to force the deciding leg that allowed his opponent to score a double five and finally seal the glory.
“I’m glad,” said Smith. “I got my third world title and my wife told me to give this trophy back, and I finally got it.
“I was far from perfect tonight but I have to take my chances when they come.
“I thought it might not be my time but I dug in and came back. Luckily for me, Gez missed and I was able to hit the double five.
“I have to keep riding this wave smoothly and keep riding this wave – I hope it continues. I am very happy to win this and it has been a great week visiting Bahrain for the first time.”
