A Spy Amongriends adapts Ben McIntyre’s book about the friendship between British spies Kim Philby and Nicholas Elliot at the height of the Cold War

Spy Amongriends, a new spy drama about the friendship between Kim Philby and Nicholas Elliott, is coming to ITVX on Thursday 8 December.

The series, which stars Damien Lewis and Guy Pearce among others, is an adaptation of Ben McIntyre’s non-fiction book of the same name.

What do you belong to?

A Spy Amongriends is a true spy drama about the friendship between Kim Philby and Nicholas Elliott – two undercover MI6 intelligence officers during the early Cold War, who have been lying to each other for over 20 years.

The official ITVX synopsis for A Spy Amongriends states that “In 1963 England, Nicholas Elliot works for MI6 as an intelligence officer but is left in a tailspin when he learns that his close friend and colleague Kim Philby has been secretly working as a KGB double agent and defected to the Soviet Union” .

Who plays a spy among friends?

Damien Lewis plays Nicholas Elliott, a member of MI6’s secret service. Lewis is best known for playing Nicholas Brody on Homeland, as well as starring in Band of Brothers, Wolf Hall, and Billions.

Guy Pearce plays Kim Philby, a former member of MI6 who believes he is a Soviet double agent. Pierce may still be best known for his stint on Neighbours, but since then he has appeared in films like Iron Man 3, The Hurt Locker, and Memento. On television, he has appeared in Jack Irish, A Christmas Carol, and Mare of Easttown.

Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lily Thomas, an MI5 member investigating what Elliot did who didn’t know about his spy best friend. You’ll recognize Anna Maxwell Martin from her roles in the parenting comedy Motherland and the crime drama Line of Duty, but you might also know her from The Bletchley Circle, Code 404, or Hollington Drive.

They are joined by Stephen Conken (Billions, The Handmaid’s Tale) and Adrian Edmondson (Back to Life, The Pact) among others.

Who writes and directs?

A Spy Amongriends was developed by Alexander Carey, who writes every episode. Curry is best known for writing episodes of Homeland, Lie to Me, and The Riches; He was now next in line to be Viscount ofalkland, the senior viscount of Scotland.

The series is directed by BAFTA Award winner Nick Murphy (Save Me, Blood, The Awakening), who previously directed Guy Pearce in A Christmas Carol.

All six episodes will be available to watch as part of a boxset on Thursday 8 December with the launch of ITVX, a new free streaming service.

How many episodes are there?

There are six episodes of “Spy Amongriends”, each about an hour long.

Is The Spy Amongriends based on a true story?

Yes it is! More specifically, the series is based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Ben McIntyre – and reveals what happened in the years after Kim Philby was exposed as a Soviet spy, and how the British security services responded.

Some of the story is fictional and staged, of course – one of the major changes made for this TV adaptation is the introduction of Anna Maxwell Martin’s character, Lily, who didn’t exist in real life.

What else is coming to ITVX?

ITVX launches with four new shows immediately: spy drama A Spy Amongriends, novel adaptation The Confessions ofrannie Langton, YA drama Tell Me Everything and a long-running finale to historical comedy Plebs.
