Nunez, 23, joined Liverpool for a club record in the summer from Benfica. He shone in the preparatory season, scoring four goals against Leipzig, and then in the Community Shield against Manchester City. But he has struggled ever since.

Only three goals in nine games, and a direct red card with a header to Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen, spoiled his debut at Anfield. But Nunez scored against Arsenal on Sunday despite losing 3-2.

Liverpool coach Klopp was asked about the South American star on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Scotland to face Rangers in the Champions League. He praised Nunez but believes the striker needs confidence to thrive.

Nunez really needs a streak of scoring. It was a brilliant finish against Arsenal on Sunday, his first goal in two months with the Reds. He arrived after scoring on the opening day of the season againstulham, following his goal in the Community Shield.

After a tough start and pre-season comparisons with Erling Haaland fading away, his goal against Arsenal will be a real confidence booster. But the striker really needs a series of matches in which he scores.
