Liverpool hosts Eurovision Song Contest 2023
Glasgow and Liverpool were the two remaining candidates to host the popular event, with Graham Norton’s final announcement on BBC One’s The One Show.
Confirmed – Liverpool will host Eurovision 2023.
The city will welcome thousands of performers, crew and spectators in May 2023, as the UK prepares to host the world famous Ukraine Song Contest. Ukraine, which won the 2022 edition, was excluded from hosting due to security concerns about its active conflict with Russia.
The UK was chosen as the host country instead of Ukraine after Sam Ryder took second place behind the Kalush Orchestra – the UK’s highest center in decades. Now attention will turn to Glasgow/Liverpool as preparations intensify.
Where will Eurovision 2023 be held?
In a special edition of The One Show, Eurovision legend Graham Norton revealed that Liverpool will host the show. Glasgow and Liverpool were the last favorites in the race, with cities like Birmingham and Manchester out in the previous rounds.
So the show will take place at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. Excitement was high for Eagle fans who were investigating every little idea of the host city, including looking at the listings for each place at the time the competition would normally take place.
Why was Eurovision not held in Ukraine?
It was announced in June that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had decided to withdraw electricity to host Ukraine, amid security concerns for participants and visitors. As the winning country, it is a tradition that the next competition be held in that nation.
However, while Ukraine is still grappling with the ongoing conflict with Russia, the European Broadcasting Union said it was handing hosting duties to the United Kingdom. In a statement, the group said: “Normally at least 10,000 people are certified to work in or at the Eurovision Song Contest, including crew, staff and journalists. Another 30,000 fans are expected to travel to the event from all over the world. Their well-being is our primary concern. .
“It is therefore of paramount importance that decisions regarding such a complex live TV event are made by broadcast professionals and not become politicized.
“The rules of the Economic and Social Council (ESC), to which all participating broadcasters agree, clearly state that the event can be moved in a case of force majeure such as an ongoing war.”
