Over the years since his son’s murder came to light, Lionel has often appeared on talk shows to share his thoughts on the matter.

In an interview with Charles Gibson on good morning america In the 1990s, Lionel said of what he felt might have been the cause of his son’s actions: “The closest I can come up with — to give some sort of causation to all of this — is that I think it was something cumulative.

“I think there were several events in his life starting with his hernia operation, and his concern about cutting his penis which he expressed to his mother at the time, I didn’t even know that until the trial in February 92. .

“That’s in addition to a blow to the back of the head, plus I don’t know about these various accidents, turning around and being hit by a road kill.

“All of this stuff came to a cumulative end and got hooked up, and I firmly believe it was related to his sexuality at age 14 or 15. There were no really public signs. He wasn’t foaming in his mouth or talking to himself in his sleep, or acting weird.”

The father said his son was a “very adorable little boy” but was “very shy” and “very aloof” when he grew up, something he urged other parents to follow up with their children.

“This is another thing I would like to show parents, even if their child seems innocently shy, try to express their fears and anger,” he said on the show. “Because if they don’t talk to anyone, there will be no reality check at all, and what they can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality.”

Lionel repeated this in a 1994 interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying, “The only signs I saw were shyness and reluctance to engage in social interactions, that kind of thing. But there are really no overt signs of any kind.”

During the interview, Lionel said that his son was not sexually or physically abused as a child. Looking for a reason to kill Dahmer, he said he believed his son’s reluctance to talk about his problems was a red flag.

“I don’t have much scientific evidence for that, but here is a message I want to give to parents: I feel that if a young man, especially a male, had reached puberty and kept everything inside, bottled everything inside without talking to peers, friends and family about Anything at all about their fears, anger, and frustration, I feel it’s very possible that all of these fears are mixed with sexual vigilance, to the point where they don’t understand what’s going on,” he said.

In a 2020 documentary about his son titled monster mindLionel also shared how his divorce from Dahmer’s mother, Joyce Flint, came as a shock.

“Jeff reacted badly, he got out and started smacking the trees with a branch because he felt like he lost control, and he was obviously frustrated with that,” Lionel said. “He would come home drunk from high school, the drinking was getting worse and I talked about the dangers of continuing, but I think at the time he was very physically and mentally addicted.”
