The actor, who played Jeffrey Augustine in Riverdale, also plotted to kill Canadian leader Justin Trudeau.
The Riverdale star pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March of this year, two years after the incident.
Here is everything you need to know about it.
On March 31, 2020, Barbara White was found dead at her home in Canada with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Her 21-year-old son shot her in the back of the head at her Squamish home while she was playing the piano.
He wrapped his mother’s body in a sheet, arranged lit candles around it and hung a piano rosary before driving away the next day.
He had then intended to travel to Ottawa to assassinate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who Grantham later told police was “the most important person in Canada”.
In a GoPro video filmed by the actor himself, Grantham admitted to killing his mother before loading the car with guns, ammunition and Molotov cocktails.
He drove 200 kilometers east before turning back, and thought of planning a major assault on the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver or Simon Fraser University, which he had previously attended.
Grantham allegedly told experts that he wanted to kill his mother to prevent her from witnessing the brutality he planned to commit.
That night, however, he drove to the Vancouver Police Department to turn himself in for the murder of his mother.
What sentence did he get?
Grantham was convicted of murdering his mother and sentenced to life in prison, and now 24, the actor will not be eligible to file for parole for the first 14 years of his sentence.
Grantham and his lawyers had hoped for an earlier option to release him from the British Columbia Prosecution Service while knowing his crime was punishable by life imprisonment (BCPS).
During a hearing in June this year, he expressed his regret to the court while saying he had “no excuse” for his actions.
Grantham said, “I can’t explain or justify my actions. I have no excuse. It pains me to think how bad my life has been lost. In the face of something so terrible, saying sorry seems to be pointless. But out of every shred of my being, I’m sorry.”
During the trial, his defense argued that he suffered from depression, anxiety and self-loathing, and expressed a desire to harm himself or others in the months leading up to his mother’s death.
According to two psychiatric reports obtained in the aftermath of the murder, Grantham had a cannabis use disorder after years of heavy use, but managed to maintain the illusion that he was behaving normally.
The court was told that he trained to kill by “passages”, secretly approaching his mother from behind with a gun – a video of one of the passes he made was shown as evidence.
What TV shows and movies has he been in?
Grantham began acting at the age of nine and is best known for his role in the British Columbia-based series Riverdale.
On the show, his character Jeffrey Augustine accidentally killed Fred Andrews in a hit-and-run accident while illegally driving his father’s car. Then his father George accepted responsibility for the tragedy.
The on-screen incident occurred because Luke Perry, who portrayed Fred in the Netflix series, died of a stroke in March 2019 and had to be written out of the show.
Grantham’s other credits include the TV shows Supernatural and iZombie, as well as the films Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
